Press freedom in South Africa dealt another blow as Independent Media withdraws from Press Council
22nd of October 2016
Following Dr. Iqbal Survé’s Independent Media’s decision to close online comments on their ridiculously biased articles , they have now declared that they are withdrawing from the Press Council.
Independent Media withdraws from press ombudsman
They have now appointed their own Ombudsman, Jovial Rantao, editor of the Star and chairman of the SA National Editors Forum (Sanef). They clearly don't like to be told what to do when they are caught out praise singing the ANC and blatantly spreading ANC propaganda.
Independent Media criticised the Press Council for not reintroducing a waiver clause to the Press Code that forces complainants to the ombudsman to relinquish their rights to institute civil proceedings against media houses.
The waiver clause was scrapped from the Press Code following recommendations by former chief justice Pius Langa’s press freedom commission.
What Independent Media is not saying is that there are at least 77 complaints against IOL lying at the Press Council (72 print and 5 online) in this year alone.
